7 things to check for a perfect bra fit:

We recommend having a mirror ready and going through the list below:

  • The back of the bra (the band around your body) should form a straight line.
  • The centre front (that is the component that is between your breasts) is lying flat against your chest in between your breasts.
  • Do up your bra using the hook and eye closure so that the bra band sits snug against your skin.
  • All of your breast tissue is inside the cups.
  • When you’ve tightened your straps, they sit in position on your shoulders without digging in.
  • For an underwired bra, the underwire should lay comfortably under the breast tissue and into your underarm area.
  • For a non wired bra, your breast tissue is inside the cup area.

THE GOLDEN RULE: Your bra should feel snug, but not too tight on your back. The cups should also be filled without any loose fabric or breast overspill.

Anatomy of a Bra

To make sure you get the right fit you need to understand the anatomy of a bra. A good bra can do wonders for your confidence. With the right fit you’ll spend less time worrying about your posture, your shape and how it feels, and more time focusing on the important stuff in life.
What is it?
The band around your body.
Job of the Band
It’s part of the bra that holds 80% of the weight of your cups. The straps only hold 20%.
How do I know if it fits?

Look in the mirror – the back of the bra (the band around your body) should form a straight line.

If you’re struggling to breathe wearing the bra, or the band of the bra is sitting very high, it’s too small and too tight around your chest. We’d recommend ordering a size up.
If the bra slides up when you raise your arm up to the air it’s too big. We recommend ordering a size down.
If you want the band to feel a little tighter around your chest for a snugger fit, just tighten the hook and eye fastening.
What is it?
The component that sits between your breasts.
Job of the CENTRE FRONT
It gives structure to the bra shape.
How do I know if it fits?

Look in the mirror and see if the centre front is lying flat against your chest (or breast bone) in between your breasts.

If the centre front is floating and is creating a gap between your skin and the bra, it’s likely too small. We recommend ordering a size up.
What is it?
The closure mechanism of the bra.
Job of the HOOK AND EYE
Allow you to adjust the fit of the bra.
How do I know if it fits?

You should be able to do up your bra using the hook and eye closure and the bra band sit snuggly against your skin.

If you can’t do this, the bra is too small. We recommend ordering a size up.
If there’s a big gap between your bra and your skin, the bra is too big. We recommend ordering a size down.
Breast volume increases up to 40% the week before menstruation, and it is normal for your breasts to change throughout your cycle*. Be kind to yourself. Loosen your band of the bra by putting the hook and eye on a looser setting to feel more comfortable and loosen your straps a little. *Source: Dr Hazel Wallace, ‘Not just a period’.
What is it?
The part of the bra that the breasts sit in.
Job of the CUP
Quite simply, the cups support and shape your breasts.
How do I know if it fits?

Bend forward a little so your breasts naturally fall forward, guide the breast tissue from the sides, into the centre of your cup. All of your breast tissue should be inside the cups.

If there’s a big gap at the top of the cup, or if your breasts do not fill the cups, the bra is too big. We recommend ordering a size down.
If your breasts are spilling out in the middle or top of the bra when you bend forward, your bra is too small. We recommend ordering a size up.
If there’s a small gap at the top between the cup and your skin, this can sometimes be solved by tightening your bra straps.
What is it?
The material that goes over your shoulders.
Job of the STRAPS
The straps only hold 20% of the weight of your cups, so they don’t hold all of the weight of your breasts, but they do support keeping everything in position.
How do I know if it fits?

Tighten your straps so that they sit flat against your shoulders without digging in.

If your straps are very tight (even after adjusting the straps) you are putting too much weight and pressure on your straps. We recommend ordering a size down.
If your straps are falling off your shoulder (even after tightening to a comfortable position), the bra is too big. We recommend ordering a size down.
For a good fit, you should be able to fit two fingers underneath your straps where your shoulder is.
What is it?
The wire sewn into the cups of some bras.
Job of the Underwire
To help give more shape and lift to the cups.
How do I know if it fits?

In an underwired bra, the underwire should lay comfortably under the breast tissue and into your underarm area.

If the underwire is laying on top of your breast tissue or the wire is poking into your ribcage and breast tissue, the bra is too small. We recommend ordering a size up.
If the underwire is sitting very low down on your rib cage and the bra is not supporting your breast tissue, the bra is too big. We recommend ordering a size down.
